Sugar Coated Easter baskets

Does anyone remember making these? This was a tradition every year when I was growing up to make our own sugar coated easter baskets, We used Huge balloons :) More space for the candy!

This is a small one I made last night with a 7" inch balloon, crochet string and some sugar/water. It takes them almost 24 hours to dry before you can pop the balloon and cut you basket opening out. It needs to be dried to let the sugar get hard to keep the basket form. I used about 1 cup sugar to 1/2 warm water to make the sugar dissolve and make it like a syrup. Start off by tieing
your string around the end of the balloon then just wrap your heart out all around it in different directions. When you wrapped it to your liking tie it off again at the end of the balloon leaving some extra to hang it up.

Roll it around in your sugar water then hang it up to let it drip dry, My mom used to set them on a cookie sheet so the bottom would form flat, but be careful when taking them off it will be stuck to it a little.

Basically that's about all there is to it, when they are dry pop the balloon, cut out an opening and remove the popped balloon and decorate your basket however you wish. Add buttons, lace, doilies, hang tags, flowers, ribbons, raffia, and so on. Enjoy!
